Double-Take

I had to take a second look at “Dusting” and, an earlier posting, “Fence Line” — same fence, different day, month, and year.

This is no way to spend a life (in the arts).

And I resent the splint on my middle finger too.

I should give it three more weeks but might have patience for only two: what a waste of talent, in any case, compulsively making the same snapshot over and over and over and over again (and again) and again.

Not that they’re really the same at all, but I don’t have enough Barnum in me to defend “Fence Line I (II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, etc.)” as . . . art.

The truth is, the last thing the photographer does is take the picture.

Well, that used to be the last thing before a chemical and paper routine with minor variations took place (generally speaking). Β For a while now, I’d say about a decade for most of us, the straight photograph (honest: “right out of the camera!”) will do for a start.

I have one of the Adobe Suites and can get serious about photo-illustration and poster layout, but if I’m not out to break new ground with the latest whiz-bang (absent definite compensation), a few minutes with PhotoSlop may do for entertainment.

Basic digital’s too easy.

Complicated digital darkroom for it’s own sake may be too obsessive in the web’s visually rambunctious atmosphere.

I’m about ready to pick up a rig, put down an easel and drop cloth, and pick up a brush (would that I had that patience and childlike gonzo today).

Whatever the reflections, I got out for my walk — just like a dog or a prisoner or both — and I guess it was good, once back in my chair before a warm LaCie monitor, nosing around in the archive a few minutes on a blustery cold winter’s day.

Metal splints and sub-freezing cold do not mix!

How I should like to be out with a camera on a cold winter’s night again: perhaps I will get my chance in February.

The two photographs here showed up on the virtual light table for “December” (any year), and I wouldn’t take them quite the same way today. Β Back then: Nikon D2x with the 17-55 mm f/2.8 — my wedding machinery, those two — and a big Bogen 3021 tripod.

I had the coolest girlfriend back, and she was along for cheer and support.

Today, I’d go out with the D 200 and the 16-85 mm VR II — it would probably get these hand-held — and I would be alone (so far as I know from how things are going).

On the other hand, we are living in the age of abundant and spectacular photography: are we dazzled yet?

Numbed out?

Would I stay in (as I do) for want to confidence in the future enjoyment of the work, i.e., pleasure taken by others in the artifact?

I don’t know.

I guess we’re going to find out (when the splint comes off and I can hold a DSLR again).

In any case, it’s still lovely going out, looking, seeing, being, remembering.

Busted! But the Finger Will Live.

Digital tragedy strikes “writer, photographer, musician” . . . .

πŸ™‚

Right hand, long finger, first segment, tendon over the knuckle, AKA “mallet finger” (#&%@! fitted sheet, mattress, and contoured convex foot board).

😦

Splint: two-inch “ski tip” with foam padding; tape: 3M micropore waterproof; no docs — Kaiser “urgent care” was two counties away.

Good news: I can handle the Lumix Lx5 “high-end point-and-shoot” using only my left hand!

Bad news: The splint stays on four weeks plus two — then, probably, nights.

Good news: I own a 19th Century-style home library.

Reading planned: Wistrich’s big book on anti-Semitism.

Reading now:Β Hebron Jews: Memory and Conflict in the Land of Israel.

Wisdom recalled from my days working as a production editor for the Journal of Speech and Hearing Research: “We are all only temporarily able.”

Sentiment: my heart and my prayers go out to those who have suffered more permanently debilitating accidents.

All things considered, I am blessed with a fine winter for reading.
